About this piece
A modern figurative painting: a central female figure in a red dress, water running from her hands, surrounded by faces and flowers. Water is life. It flows through us, carrying away time, meetings, people and moments that can no longer be brought back. All we can choose is who to keep close now, while there is still time to be together. At the centre of the painting a woman holds water in her palms — the one thing that cannot be held forever. On the left are the faces of those who are beside us today. They are painted clearly; they are here, in the present. On the right are the faces of people who have already become part of the past. They dissolve into memory little by little, growing quieter and more transparent. Yet their presence is still felt. The memory of them goes on warming us even when they are no longer near. On the woman's dress appears the symbol of a jack — a reference to the card suit and to the game, where every move changes the hand that follows. Here the jack becomes an image of choice, of chance, and of a person's own part in their own story. We cannot always choose the circumstances, but we can choose our next move — who to call, who to embrace, who to share this day with. The flowers beside those who have gone become a symbol of memory. They remind us that a person may disappear from our life without disappearing from our inner world. Water remembers everything. And our trajectory is made up of those we choose to love and to cherish now.
